Or stay the same width?Yes, this machine works your pecs very well. I’m 6′ and 240lbs been lifting since HS, upon full press the grips come to 4inches of each other, great squeeze. Love this machine and highly recommend it, I also use this machine to do shrugs.

How well does the gas assisted starting position work?There is no gas assisted starting position this is not a hydraulic unit, it is leverage system only the starting position sits on a elevated platform position and then you press up

How much weight does it hold?I love this machine , it’s a quality piece for sure, very smooth and comfortable to use, if I’m not mistaken I believe it can handle weight in the 500Lb. Range, I’ve put over 300 lbs. On it and it was smooth as silk. Very good machine highly recommend.

How far apart are the hand grips spaced in the lowest/starting position?This machine allows you to have a grip that works the chest & triceps or a grip that primarily works the chest. It actually allows 3 distinct, different grips. Best piece of equipment I ever owned!

Can this machine be adjusted to perform incline or decline bench presses?No. it does flat bench only. however it does offer various grips (I even press using the large diameter tubes) and excellent ergodynamics. I also use it for behind the back shrugs and for inclined ab twists by facing the machine and locking my feet under the cross tubes. Its a great machine for the price.

What is the weight equivalent ratio to a free weight bench press?To answer your question, it is just less than 1:1, maybe .8 to 1, as there is some leverage you have when using it, it will also be a tad easier on the grip position furthest away from the pivot point and a tad harder on the grip position closest to the pivot point for the same reason, and you are also lifting the press arm which does not weigh much and you have some leverage on it also.
